Sailing tips: Phonetic Alphabet and Signal Flags

A phonetic alphabet is a list of words used to identify letters in a message transmitted by radio or telephone. It helps to prevent confusion between similar sounding letters, such as «m» and «n» when boats, yachts and ships communicate in the sea. For example, the word «EOLIA» would be «Echo Oscar Lima India Alpha» when spelled in the phonetic alphabet.

Each letter has a corresponding signal flag which also corresponds to an international sailing meaning.

Specifically, the letters, the phonetics, the signal flags and their international meanings are:

Finding a sailing group

During the last years it has become very popular to charter a yacht with people you never met before. Actually passengers are willing to meet each other on board. You can come alone or with your friend and you don’t have to rent the entire boat to be able to sail.

You don’t have to be an open participating and a sociable person since everyone on board can participate on the works of the boat or having lunch or relaxing. “The wind will bring new encounters”

This type of sailing trips usually last one week or ten days and there are some very interesting islands and fish ports you may visit.

The philosophy to sail in sailboat is “the freedom”, the power to go with your floating small house where the wind takes you, in order to have unforgettable vacations.

On an sailboat you may have some hard and less hard moments but the trip will stay forever in your heart!

It is the skipper’s job to sail you to interesting places, to make you feel safe, feel at home and to take care of all possible problems
