Sailing the Argosaronic Island of Poros

Poros, the most beautiful and exciting island of the Saronic gulf, is not so well known to Tourism, with no obvious reasons. Located so close to Peloponnese, Poros has conserved for years the typical Greek island way of life, thus making it an ideal destination for people sailing Greece with a yacht charter.

Ofcourse there’s no such tourist flow as in the adjacent islands of Hydra and Spetses, but during the summer you can easily tell you are in a Greek island!

Poros means “narrow passage” and the Peloponnese coast with the picturesque village of Galatas is some 370 m. away, with many small boats to take you there for the local taverns and the famous Lemon tree forest.

Poros is a green island with pine trees covering much of the island’s hills and beaches.

Entering the Poros strait you’ll be amazed from the view of the tiled roofs of the houses built a small peninsula overlooking the harbor.

You can sit on a small waterfront small tavern tasting the various and most delicious gifts of the sea, and you can watch all kinds of vessel crossing the strait.

Poros is actually two islands, Sphairia (a volcanic rock) and Kalavria (meaning «gentle Breeze»). Kalavria at first was offered to Apollo who offered to Poseidon in return for Delphi.

In mythology times Aithra, mother of Theseus, founded in Sphairia the temple of Athena Apatoria to honor her encounter with Poseidon. She must have enjoyed a hell of a good time during that “encounter”, to offer an entire temple…!

Sightseeing: The ruins of the temple of Poseidon from the 6th century monastery of the Life Giving Fountain is the most remarkable sights of the island.

There are also plenty of classic old and interesting buildings in the town of Poros. The Clock Tower is one of the most important milestones of Poros and worth a stroll up here.

Activities: Poros offers many sport activities such as windsurfing, skiing, boating and parasailing.  Many travellers choose the island because it is close to Athens and several ancient sites on the mainland. From Poros you can make excursions to Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplion.

Beaches: In Poros you can find beaches covered with either sand orpebble. Most of them are on the southern coast of Kalavria. In general, the beaches of Poros are very quiet as they are in sheltered bays. Askeli, the Large and Small Neorio and Harbor of Love are only some of the most beautiful beaches of the island. But to explore the hidden treasures of Poros you ‘ll need to go there by a rented boat or by chartering your own yacht.

Nightlife and entertainment: There are many bars and cafes along the beach in the town of Poros and the traffic is very intense, especially in August and during the weekend when many Athenians come.

Dining and Restaurants: There are many restaurants in the town of Poros and in the beaches. There is a choice between the Greek and international cuisine, try a local lemon juice and local sweets. On the beach of Poros will find good restaurants with fresh fish and reasonable prices. There are nice taverns in the street alongside the beach.

Shopping and markets: The shops selling all the memorabilia: textile, leather and rugs, and items for your home or boat.
