Discover the Greek islands with a yacht charter: Sailing to Ithaca

Ithaca the island of Odysseus, and perhaps of Homer, is a little island that attracts visitors from around the world. It is very beautiful, surrounded by some of the bluer waters in Greece. Since it is small and a bit difficult to access, Ithaca does not have the mass tourism of its neighboring Ionian Islands such as Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakinthos. Therefore, many celebrities choose to spend their holidays on their yachts or in their villas.

Ithaca is a truly magical place and represents the longing to return home from abroad. Local people are known for their hospitality and they will do anything to make you feel welcome.

Activities: Relax! One of the most important characteristics of the island is the laid-back feeling and the sense of relaxation it offers. Ithaca is also excellent for swimming, diving and also climbing mountains. Nature is sharp and beautiful and has a great variety of flora and fauna, therefore it is a good choice for long walks and hiking. In August there is a cultural festival with artists and orchestras from around the world.

Beaches. There are beaches with sand and pebbles. Vathi, Frikes and Kioni all have beaches, but a great alternative is to go by boat and visit some of the most inaccessible areas. You’ll be amazed at how crystal clear the waters really are! If you are sailing the Ionian Islands with a rented or with your own yacht you are most privileged because you have the chance to visit dozens of deserted and inaccessible beaches.

Nightlife and entertainment: Ithaca is an island for relaxing, but at the same time it offers various choices of bars, cafes and pubs.

Food and restaurants: Local restaurants serving mostly good, traditional Greek cuisine. Most of the local specialties include fish but don’t forget to try some of the local home made desserts.

Shopping and markets: You can find traditional souvenirs and clothes in the island. In Vathi there are many shops with beautiful handmade jewelry, artwork and antiques.

Transportation: There is a bus that connects Vathi with Frikes and Kioni. Because the island is mountainous, many find the trip by bus scary because the roads are very narrow and winding. There are smaller boats that can take you around the island. You will also find a taxi, and you can rent a motorbike or a car.

Sporades

Winds and sailing conditions
A steady wind from midday to evening, becoming fresh in July and August. Mind the Meltemi wing in the late summer.

Dodecanese
The Dodecanese islands are in the east part of Greece, and although there are some 200 islands, only 26 are inhabited all year round.

There are 12 main islands : Rhodes, Kos, Astypalea, Kalimnos, Karpathos, Kassos, Kastellorizo, Leros, Nisyros, Patmos, Symi and Tilos.

Most of the islands live on tourism and the archeological history is testified by the number of museums even in the smallest island.

The climate is mild and in the summer with Meltemi, a local wind coming from the north during June till September.

Cyclades
Location
In the center of the Aegean sea the Cyclades islands formatted by some 40 islands, famous for their touristic attraction, like Mykonos, Ios, Santorini, Naxos and Paros. The Meltemi, an especially strong northern wind, blows strongly during the summer.

Winds and sailing conditions:
Cyclades offer an open sea sailing. In the summer, Meltemi blows with some 10-15 knots (25-30 knots sometimes). The temperature in the summer is 24-28°.

Ionian
Ionian islands can be divided in two main groups. One in the North with Corfu, Paxoi and Antipaxoi and the one in the South with Leukada, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zante etc. In the crystal clean waters of the islands you can find excellent points of mooring, relaxing places with many typical Greek tavernas and the famous night life!
