Discover Sporades islands with a yacht charter: Sailing to Skopelos

Skopelos is considered by many visitors as  the most beautiful island in the Sporades, or even in Greece, with old traditional whitewashed houses, with huge flower pots, many churches and covered with forest. The scenery is dramatic, with high mountains and deep valleys.

The capital of Skopelos, Chora,  is quite large, but very quiet and clean. Most beaches are pebbly and if you are traveling with your own yacht or with a yacht charter you’ll have the chance to visit many of them which are inaccessible by any other means. Keep in mind that in Greek Islands those beaches are usually the most beautiful ones. Since the island is a famous destination for sailing yachts, motor boats and catamarans, you’ll find many local businesses oriented towards serving the needs of people traveling with yachts, such as hot showers, etc.

Skopelos is marked by international tour agents as a quiet island suitable for couples and families. This is not entirely true, since there are many bars and several nightclubs on the island. Of course it’s not the island for partying all day and all night like Mykonos and Ios, but there’s a pretty good night life with a more sophisticated style.

Local people are occupied with agriculture and tourism, and there are several that deal with fisheries. Because there is a big photo exhibition here every summer, the island is very cosmopolitan, with photographers and visitors from all over Greece and the world.

Skopelos means «rock» which is a good description of this mountainous island. The name has changed through history; it used to be called Peparithos in ancient times.

History: We do not know who the first inhabitants of the island were, but tradition says that for the first time the island was inhabited by Cretans in Minoan times. According to mythology, Prince Stafylos was the son of Theseus and Ariadne, and supposedly came and settled in Skopelos with its people. Its name means «grape», and the island has been known since antiquity as a major wine producer. An ancient tomb in Stafylos is believed by many that belonges to the king. Just like the neighboring Sporades Islands –Skiathos and Allonisos- Skopelos passed under the dominion of the Athenians, Spartans, Macedonians and Romans.

During the 13th century, the Sporades Islands were conquered by the Venetians and in the 16th century conquered by the Turks. There were also numerous pirate raids and people tried to seek refuge in several churches built.

Sights: In Chora you can visit the Folk Museum or walk through the old town. Starting from the left edge of the sea port, there are some stairs leading up to the old fortress. The climb is beautiful, with many small churches and old houses. On the other side of the bay you can visit a convent dedicated to Mary.

You can also access Glossa, a village that brings Santorini in mind because it is built on a steep hill facing the sea. From here you can see the island of Skiathos.

Activities: There are some sports from the beaches and renting a car is a good idea.

You can also take guided walks around the island where you’ll see old farmhouses and stop at churches and wells. Every summer there is a large photographic exhibition that should not be missed. Skopelos is famous as a sailing destination and you can combine the visits to all of the Sporades Islands. If you decide to rent a yacht you are advised to find a Yacht Charter Company prior to your visit in Skopelos, since you’ll have many more options and manage to book the yacht in a better price.

Beaches: All beaches of Skopelos are pebbly besides Limnonari. However, the most impressive is the great number of beaches. There are beaches suitable for families, for young couples, for elderly people, for nudist, etc. People traveling by yacht will have even more options.

Nightlife and entertainment: Nightlife can mainly be found in Chora. Most bars are small and located on the harbor and surrounding streets. At night the island comes alive, with tavernas and bars. The shops stay open until late, and the atmosphere is wonderful.

Dining and Restaurants: Skopelos is famous for the local cheese pie that definitely worth trying. The local walnut pie is another specialty of the island and is usually served with ice cream. In Skopelos you will find many restaurants with Greek and international cuisine.

Shopping and markets: Most shops are in Chora including small boutiques, jewelry and ceramics.

Transportation: Skopelos has good bus links to the beaches and Glossa, but because the island is so steep you often have to walk the last bit. There are also taxis and offices to rent cars and motorbikes.
