Sailing Greece – From Athens to Sporades

The name of the capital of Greece derives from the name of the goddess of the wisdom and intelligence, Athena. This unique city is the town , where the democracy saw for the first time the light of the day, and where the Parthenon, the jewel of the architecture, was constructed. Today around a third of the population of Greece (4.5 million people) live in Athens, and the modern city offers an infinite variety of culture and entertainment.
There are two hills are in the heart of the city, one crowned by the Acropolis and of monuments of Pericles, and the hill of Licabettus with the small church of Saint George. Plaka and Monastiraki, the district of the city around the hill of the Acropolis, is a tourist landmark, with narrow side streets and attractive places that show the romantic side of the city. In the summer, the streets are full of boisterous and colorful activity. Kolonaki, the district around the Likabettus hill, is typical of the modern urban life, with its elegant boutiques and numerous cafes
We warmly recommended to stay a day or two in Athens, to visit its many attractions like the temple of Nike Apteros, the theater of Dionysius, the Odeon de Atticus and the House of the Music, places you shouldn’t miss. Piraeus, the port of Athens, is one of the greatest ports in the Mediterranean, from old times, with remarkable night life along with the famous and romantic seafood taverns.
The coast, from the Pireaus to Kalamaki is bordered by high buildings. During the warm summer, the night life of the city goes to this coastal strip and its beach clubs and restaurants.

Kalamaki the port and the facilities:
Entering the port during the day is not any problem. At night there are lighted beacons, to avoid confusion with the many lights on coast. The port provides an excellent protection against winds of all directions. The mooring in the main port is reserved for a private yachting club. The soundings are sufficiently deep and the bottom is solid. Gas, water and electricity are too. The showers are located near the offices of the port. Finally, there are numerous stores and several cantinas near the port, and buses to Piraeus and Athens and vice versa.
To the north of Euboea, and far from the habitual routes of navigation, there are the green islands of the Sporades. All the islands are fertile, smooth, and idyllic, well known for the rich white sand beaches and the aquatic fauna. The islands that are more easily accessible have turned into more popular tourist destinations. The tranquility of Alonissos, the tree- covered Skopelos, Peristera (just by 25 inhabitants), the uninhabited Psathura, Palagonisi, and Skyros in the South. In Alonissos there is the famous Sea Park, a natural reserve fir the Mediterranean seal and dolphin. The islands are close to each other and therefore an ideal zone to explore by a yacht charter for familiar vacations and navigators without experience.
